Holistic Management of the Pregnant Patient (external)

Pregnancy is often considered a rite of passage, a deeply transformational experience for the woman (or pregnant person). As health care providers we are honoured to accompany our patients on this journey.

In this course, you will gain a solid grasp of the physical adaptations and effective osteopathic treatments for pregnancy.  But beyond the anatomical aspects, this course beckons you to broaden your perspective.  Be prepared to delve deeper, examining the biopsychosocial factors influencing each patient's experience allowing you to provide holistic and compassionate support for your patients.

  2. Gain an understanding of maternity care in Australia

  3. Gain awareness of loss in pregnancy and what supports are available

  4. Understand the importance of language during pregnancy and how the way you communicate can have significant impacts on their pregnancy and birth experience.

  5. Learn to identify red flags in pregnancy

  6. Understand the benefits and risks of exercise in pregnancy

  7. Gain an understanding of gestational diabetes, testing, management options and complications

  8. Understand the hormonal and physiological adaptations of pregnancy

  9. Understand the musculoskeletal changes during pregnancy and how best to support your patients

  10. Learn how to support pregnant patients with Ehlers-Danlos and other hypermobility syndromes 

  11. Understand consent 

  12. Understand the different types of pregnancy supports, including  belts or support shorts and when they may be indicated.

  13. Understand the mechanism of common complaints during pregnancy, including pelvic girdle pain.

  14. Learn how to effectively and efficiently assess your pregnant patients

  15. Learn a range of direct and indirect techniques focused on the whole body.
