Whole Person Approach to the Preparation and Recovery of a Caesarean birth (external)

Over 30 percent of birthing women in Australia give birth via a caesarean birth and despite this, many allied health professionals don’t have to skills to help support these women.

We want to expand the knowledge of as many allied health professional as we can, so that all the women who are having a caesarean birth can receive the care that they deserve.

This is a comprehensive course in the preparation and recovery of a caesarean birth. It includes diagnoses and treatment of caesarean birth scars, early postnatal recovery, desensitisation and much more

This course is a must for all allied health professionals.

During this course you will be learning the use of Dry needling techniques, cupping, therapeutic ultrasound and tens machine in the treatment and management of caesarean scars.

Learning outcomes

  1. Detailed anatomy of a cesarean birth

  2. Review of the anatomy of the pelvic floor and different fascial lines that are influenced by a cesarean birth

  3. Understand how a cesarean birth scar can be a driver to common musculoskeletal complaints such as hip and lower back complaints

  4. Understand the reasons for a cesarean birth

  5. Understand the short and long term Implications of a cesarean birth for both mum and baby 

  6. Understand the risk factors for cesarean birth

  7. Understand the stages of scar healing and the different types of scars that may develope

  8. Understand pelvic health considerations for a cesarean birth

  9. Understand pain consideration for a cesarean birth

  10. Gain confidence in educating your patient in early postpartum care, including Breast feeding postures, Seeding, Wound management/healing, Binding, Early movement/rehab

  11. ​​Understand the indications, precautions, contraindications for cesarean birth scar examination and treatment, including consent.

  12. Brief understanding of trauma and stress and the impact on healing from a cesarean birth

  13. Understand the importance of language when treating someone who has had a cesarean birth

  14. Confidence in performing a physical examination of a cesarean birth scar, including objective measures of a cesarean birth scar.

  15. Develop confidence in myofascial release techniques for cesarean birth scar

  16. Develop confidence in using myofascial cups and Gua Sha release tool, in the release of cesarean birth scars

  17. Develop confidence in the use of ultrasound machine, dry needling and tens in the treatment and management of caesarean scar pain and mobility

  18. Confident in prescribing a self-management program (including silicone tape, desensitization, self massage, mobility and core strengthening exercises)

  19. Develop a whole-person clinical management framework for the management of caesarean birth

  • At the end of this course you will be qualified to do dry needling to abdominal scars only

  • It is within the scope of practice for osteopaths to use dry needling and cupping within their treatment as long as they have had appropriate training. This training qualifies you for dry needling of abdominal scars only. As it is within the scope of an osteopath, your insurance should cover you after doing this course

    If you are not an osteopath you will need to confirm this with your association and insurance provider

  • It is within the scope of practice for osteopaths to use theraputic ultrasound and TENS machines within their treatment as long as they have had appropriate training. This training qualifies you for the use of therapeutic ultrasound and TENS.

    As it is within the scope of an osteopath, your insurance should cover you after doing this course
